I’m a pro-democracy bookseller & I’m looking for a few more readers to adopt me on “Bookshop,” the site for folks who order new books online. Bookshop is a great alternative to Amazon for books. To adopt me, start on my page & keep my logo in the corner while you shop. bookshop.org/shop/karensb...

My head is buried in the sand, unapologetically, watching Lucas Sin walk us through the treasures of Hong Kong.

Pardon my penmanship. Thursday is payday, and I’m running out of room in this notebook.

My friend and co-worker, Elissa, asked me what my Criterion Closet would look like. A geek-out ensued.

This is my five, based on what is currently available on Criterion’s streaming service at the moment:

Dear Internet, please stop showing me clips of white people fucking with cobras unless they (white people) die in the end. Right now hubris is at an all time high.

Also, is NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC now just a JACKASS ripoff?!

When Bjork says 90% of the world is “too nostalgic” I think to myself, I’m certainly part of that doomed percentile.

I want to be doomed in a more meaningful way.

Just shake your heads and put the fire out. I’m sorted for history.

Every biography is a jumping off point for history. Reading Jean Strouse, and thinking back to Nancy Spurling’s Matisse biography, it’s easy to see why these things matter to us. A river of time we thought flowed past us flows through us. Same wild water. Same mandate of spiritual importance.

I hate funerals. I don’t like attending them, and I don’t wish my own on anyone willing to show up. I think having a film festival is a better idea.

File under: What’s in a name?

Anchorage, Alaska. Anchorage. These dire people felt the most commemorative aspect of this place on Earth was that their forebears paused there. I guess the rest is history, but none so remarkable that it could overtake Anchorage as a name.

It’s time to read Tennessee Williams again. Stage his plays and see the movies. All the old hypocrisies are alive.
