If it was the right thing to do, then he should have done it earlier and not said he wouldn’t. Comparing it to DT’s actions is not helpful—DT sets the standard for corruption, disgrace, and immorality and is no kind of ethical baseline. Would Lincoln do it? Would (either) Roosevelt? I think not.
