🐦 Bird of the Week: Red-naped Sapsucker
Winter visitor to riparian areas near Black Canyon City. 🔴 Fun fact: the sap wells they drill feed hummingbirds, insects, and even other birds. Males have a red cap and throat; females have a white chin.

🌼 Plant of the Week: Fetid Marigold (Dyssodia papposa) — native. One of several plants called “dogweed.” Grows 6"–16" with bright yellow, slightly drooping blooms spring through fall. Common along roadsides, washes, and open desert. Crush the leaves and you’ll instantly understand the name “fetid.”

Bird of the Week: Song Sparrow. Long tail, striped face, and streaked chest with a dark central spot. Common in our area and right at home along waterways like our pond.
AZ birds are smaller and paler, but the males make up for it with complex songs—some learning 2,000+ in a day!

🌿 Plant of the Week: Triangle Bursage (Ambrosia deltoidea)
A hardy Sonoran Desert native that stabilizes soil and shelters seedlings & wildlife.
⚠️ Highly allergenic pollen for some.
⚠️ Note: its pollen can be highly allergenic for some people.

Bird of the Week – Great Blue Heron
Seen this month at Black Canyon Heritage Park! 🐦
Sstanding up to 4 feet tall with an impressive wingspan.
Did you know? These herons can stand perfectly still for long periods before striking their prey with lightning-fast precision.

Plant of the Week: Stinknet (Globe Chamomile) - It may look cheerful with its bright yellow button-like flowers—but don’t be fooled. This non-native invasive plant is spreading quickly and threatening our desert ecosystems.

🌼 London rocket (Sisymbrium irio) alert. INVASIVE. Pretty flowers look harmless, but poses threat to our native ecosystems & reduces biodiversity. It rebounds quickly after fire — often before native plants.
🧤 Best controlled when young; removal may take repeated efforts.

Bird of Week - Northern Flicker. Occasional but memorable visitors at Black Canyon Heritage Park. Larger than most woodpeckers. Seen on the ground as well as on trees. Stand out with their spotted plumage and graceful posture.

🐦 Bird of the Week: Merlin. Small but fierce, the Merlin (Falco columbarius) is a fast-flying falcon that hunts other birds in midair. While not seen at our 2025 Christmas Bird Count, it has been at Black Canyon Heritage Park.

Protecting diverse habitats helps keep sightings like this possible.
