Fatal Bicycle Crash Report – September 2, 2025 A preliminary investigation details a tragic incident in the 16th District on Belmont Avenue, where a bicyclist was fatally struck by a vehicle. Two cars—a black Dodge Charger and a black Chrysler—were reportedly speeding northbound when one collided with the cyclist traveling east on Avenue of the Republic. The impact caused critical injuries, and the victim was later pronounced dead at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center at 10:24 am. Police observed one of the vehicles on the 3200 block of Sedgley St shortly after the crash and seized the vehicle for further examination. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

The 47th street parking-separated bike lane is getting its lines striped from Chestnut Street and Kingsessing Avenue! 👏🏽 🚲 This southbound lane with serve as a companion to the existing northbound 48th street bike lane in West Philly.
New road configuration on S 47th St looking towards Sansom. Street is now a one way street with a parking protected bike lane. New bike lane under construction on 47th St approaching Chestnut. It is now a one way street.

The Ivy Ridge Trail will create an extension of the trail from the Manayunk Bridge to the Ivy Ridge Train Station.

Phase 2 will extend the trail to Shawmont Avenue, providing a high-quality alternate route to the Manayunk Canal Towpath. #theCircuitTrails

The first phase of the Broad St Sidepath from the Navy Yard to Broad and Pattison looks great—a scenic and stress-free 5-minute bike ride from SEPTA's NRG Station to the Navy Yard Gate.

Council Member Young introduced necessary legislation to build bike lanes on 22nd St, 23rd St, and 13th St today! These bills will go to the Streets Services Committee on 2/25 for a vote. This comes after years of community led advocacy from neighborhood groups and other stakeholders.

NJ State Senate is poised to vote on the Target Zero Commission Bill (S361) tomorrow 12/19. We're optimistic that the bill will be reconciled with the companion bill in the Assembly (A1476) and sent to the Governor.

The NJ State Senate Budget Appropriations Committee unanimously passed the A361 Target Zero Bill on December 9th with an amendment to preclude the use of red light cameras as a safety countermeasure.

As vehicles continue to grow larger and front ends change, speed is not the only factor leading to an increase in serious and fatal pedestrian crashes.

AASHTO Guide to Bicycle Facilities 5th Edition is now available. It's a bit bulky (600+ pages) and pricey ($392-$543), but the guide finally brings AASHTO into the mainstream of modern bicycle planning.

This is why we say CONCRETE NOW. Paint and plastic are not protection. Spruce and Pine are just the beginning we need REAL protected bike lanes all across the city!
A driver crashed into the sidewalk cafe of Carina Trattoria at 22nd and Spruce going through the flex posts that were supposed to "protect" the 22nd bike lane.
