Let's remember that Pell was convicted by a jury of child sexual abuse, conviction upheld on a 1st appeal, quashed on a 2nd. Throughout it all, he gave no account of himself. Arrogant doesn't start to describe. So some part of the church wants to claim his mantle. Unbelievable. Beyond saving.

Such a beautiful bridge.

My knowledge is paper thin, but I had the impression the die was set in the, guessing, 16th C, then round the 1830s the literalists overan the place.

I write this walking past the house of Pauline Jaricot in Lyon. I think it's part of the story. Pauline Jaricot and the curé off Arse discovered the remains of St Philomena, and had her canonised. Late 19th century. Heart of crazy, literal, fundamentalist backlash.

Not a theologian, but insisting on the literal truth of doctrine is much older and deeper rooted than just American fundamentalism.

Science happened in Christendom, so the church reacted, early and viscerally. Science parachuted into other cultures, fully formed and undeniable in it's power, so those cultures made space for both, without turning it into a mortal combat.

I'm sorry, but which Germans? Is there a podcast that can help me here or do I need to read something?

Most people would find that an easy decision! But you're right. It will keep them up all night.

For "fuck off and die", read "put some trousers on".

This is very clearly tip-of-iceberg of the filtering that goes on. Sky is Murdoch and I have no problem imagining the filtering comes from his person. LBC looks more unclear. It would be so good if this becomes the story for once.

All I know about Netherlands Protestantism is William of Orange. Was this a sign of religious intolerance, or was the sacred ground aspect of cemeteries so fundamental that splitting up mixed couples was widespread? The 1880s were pretty fervent, at least in England and France.

This is a nuclear armed state, FFS. Anyone feel like taking them seriously yet?

Not much, I admit :-)

I really would like someone to explain railway economics. Why has something that was affordable for all classes in the Victorian era become a luxury? Why is it cheaper to go by car, if you've 3, or even 2, in the vehicle. So sure. I agree with you.

What have private school fees done in that time?

That reads like paid copy.
