This shark took form in Aurukun, spent ten years in my living room in Melbourne and has now finally found its rightful home in Canberra among other First Nations masterpieces in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia. 🥰

Thank you @austevolsoc.bsky.social and @simone66b.bsky.social for hosting an amazing #AES2025 conference. Great to catch up with colleagues and be inspired by evolution research, especially from the ECRs. Brisbane this week was also the perfect escape from the dreary weather back south 🙏

A hearty Taiwanese breakfast of pork intestine and noodle soup, century egg congee and grilled sausage to start day 2 of #AES2025. 👌

It’s the one year anniversary of ISBE2024 in Melbourne, Australia. So many fond memories. And now it’s time to start thinking about the 2026 congress in beautiful Torino, Italy. For further information, follow @isbe2026.bsky.social or visit isbe2026.com.

Celebratory thesis defence photo when not everybody can be in the same country. At that stage, the smiles are all that matter. Congrats again Dr Emily Beasley!

Thesis passed. Congratulations Dr Beasley!

Just one day in Christchurch and I am totally obsessed with these wacky New Zealand plants in the genus Pseudopanax. They look like something out of a Dr Seuss book.

Had the most amazing lunch today in the hills overlooking Christchurch with my wonderful New Zealand based PhD student Emily Beasley, who will be defending her thesis tomorrow. 🥰

2/3 In laboratory experiments, cleaner wrasses were pitched against each other, as well as with non-cleaner wrasses to see how they would behave. We found that when direct competition was unavoidable, Bluestreaks were far more assertive and hogged the client to themselves.

🧵1/3 New research paper out today! In this study, we delved into the implications of competition between juvenile Bluestreak and Bicolor cleaner wrasses which coexist and perform important cleaning functions to benefit the inhabitants of coral reefs.

What a fun trip Singapore turned out to be. Got to hang out with work colleagues, see some amazing animals and eat lots of yummy food.

Everytime I’m back in Singapore, I make the effort to go check out the orchids on the tree at the corner of Orchard and Buyong Rd. The tree is home to clumps of Cymbidium finlaysonianum, Grammatophyllum speciosum and, my favourite, Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi. Sadly, nothing in flower at the moment.

Singapore is all about the food. And last night’s dinner was next level. So many new flavour profiles for me. Some highlights include yellow croaker fish steamed with chicken fat; stir fried celtuce with preserved mustard pickle; and jelly of Osmanthus flower and goji.
