Teacher who enjoys running, history podcasts, tabletop RPGs, and being angry at assholes.
Also defining class by college education (instead of anything that makes more sense) also makes the stats skew old since old people are less likely to have a college degree.

A fairly mediocre one though and he seems to be DEEPLY out of practice. Nobody who knows what they're doing would've been hit by that uppercut.

Yeah, as a (very!) mediocre amateur boxer that was hella sloppy.

Would a mixed tape of music burned onto a CD count? Hmmm...

For example writing Shakespearean sonnets about semiconductor design or having it draw cyberpunk illustrations in the style of 19th century French Symbolist art. I find it works best if you name drop long dead artists/writers in the prompts as that makes it less generic.

I'm sure AI has said something profound somewhere due to sheer monkey on keyboard logic but probably someone said "that's neat" and then never shared it anywhere so you never read it. In my experience the most interesting AI stuff you get is when you ask it to combine two wildly different things.

Of course a PhD in history doesn't mean you can't spout absolute nonsense about things outside your speciality. I took great joy in getting some posts by professional historians nuked by the AskHistorians mods but being absolutely full of it.

Literally. Look up the Wide Awakes.

I remember back in college I wrote a term paper with a bunch of "insert source here" and then went back later and found a bunch of sources that agreed with what I was saying. I got a good grade but professionals really shouldn't operate like that.

Ah, that's too bad, on your blog post you talked about being able to increase the power of different factions and that would affect the kinds of troops you could levy. I thought it would be fun to go FULL PEASANT and see what would happen.

Our of curiosity, what happens if you go all-in for making the lives of peasants as nice as possible and increasing peasant power to the greatest extent that you can?

My take on WH40K is that the Imperium is basically the worst of fascism, Stalinism, and the inquisition combined BUT:
1. The Imperium is so big that a lot of people can live normal lives in the cracks.
2. Everyone else is even worse so normal people end up with the choice of "Hitler or brain worms."

What surprised me the most was how blatant the whole thing was. We literally had separate boxes labelled 1, 2, and 3 for me to sort the mail info.

While doing work study we had to sort all of the mountains of correspondence from applicants into three piles:
1. Did they even read the job posting?
2. These people have no hope of getting hired but we'll string them along anyway because REASONS.
3. The people who had a shot at getting hired.

If Yoon was less of an idiot and had started his coup attempt just an hour or so later when the subway was closed so many fewer randos would've been there and the coup might've gone though. There would've probably been a massive general strike rocking the whole country the next day though.

My favorite story from those protests is an interview with a random real estate agent who was drunk and riding the subway home when some activists heading to Yoido started shouting on the subway for everyone to come help them defend democracy. And that guy and so many randos stood up and joined.

That makes sense! Thanks.

You can get pretty far with some pretty shitty study skills if you just do your homework and pay attention in class...until you hit a wall.

In high school I took notes during lectures but never referenced them later, just writing shit down helped me remember what I was listening to.

Of course, I also see some real howlers from professional historians as well, my proudest moment as a history buff was getting some posts by professional historians deleted from r/AskHistorians for spreading utter nonsense.

It's been a thing for a while where so much fascist blather is references to references to references that most normal people can't understand it, a lot like old school Marxist discourse.
July 22, 2025 at 4:09 AM
It's a reference to a fascist meme that has spread around, saying (paraphrased): "did you ever notice how the first thing the left always says about immigration is that it has given us good food, they've literally sold our birthright for a mess of pottage." (a reference to Genesis 29)
