Last week we had predominately Brown Long Eared bats swarming, this week Natterer’s 🦇 Male and female Long Eared’s caught inside the swarming site, but only male Natterer’s so far and mainly young of year.

Then we found the same exact location recorded in November 2023 and 2024 too. More evidence of crevice fidelity in hibernating bats

Bat torpid since before 5th September, which was the first surprise 🦇

Data loggers collected from our 🦇 swarming study site, now to download and see if there’s a correlation between bat position and microclimate.

Young of year male Daubenton’s bat freshly arrived at our 🦇 swarming study site. Do they arrive here with their mothers? #bats

Highlight of this Slovenian trip so far has been listening to these mating Greater/Lesser Mouse Eared bats 🦇 (Bats 30+ metres above us, even a 200mm lens struggled). #bats #chiroptera

Lovely example of bat 🦇mitigation here in Slovenia. Living with bats doesn’t need to be difficult.

Brandt’s bat 🦇 in deep torpor, covered in condensation wasn’t on the bingo card for today’s swarming site check.

Young of year male Brown Long Eared bat 🦇 resident in the swarming site.

Always good to get DNA confirmation of our 🦇 field ID skills.

The Pulsar XG35 thermal scope has been a game changer for surveying. Counting Noctules emerging from a tree roost is so simple compared to trying to see them in the gloom. 🦇 #bats

Serenaded by Noctule bats 🦇 last night.

Can’t resist a quick cave check in between jobs…
August 5, 2025 at 3:38 PM
Always good to record a Myotis species other than Daubenton’s and Natterer’s at our swarming site. I think this is only the third record!

The scale of the impact of Ash Dieback is pronounced in the woods of Littondale in @yorkshiredales.org.uk How this will affect bat populations remains to be seen.

I love Noctules. They’re a bat that’s often recorded, pretty common, but in the UK there are still fairly large gaps in our knowledge about them. In the rest of Europe they’re a migratory species, covering up to 1500 kilometres but here 🤷🏻‍♂️ #bats #Chiroptera #research #conservation #ecology

Young male Brown Long Eared bat caught yesterday in tube 33B. Tube 33B previous record - 1 BLE on 5th July 2024.

This year’s Noctule 🦇 pups are well developed already, judging by footage from this morning. I originally set up the Secacam 7 so we knew bats were present at a remote roost before setting off on the 1.5 hour drive to monitor them, but the insight into how bats are using this roost is so valuable

Interesting result on today’s survey. A cluster of Natterer’s 🦇 #bats in the same tube a group of young of year males were observed in last swarming season. Have they arrived early to claim the spot ready for swarming this season?

@ramoneskaraoke.bsky.social Hi Phil, do you know what the new port is for on the Apodemus PippyG?
June 4, 2025 at 9:57 PM
First visit back the the Kiln, and it looks like Daubenton’s 🦇 101E has an infected muzzle.

Just received the new Apodemus PippyG. There’s an interesting new port added, but what is it for?

One perk of bat surveying is the number of incidental wildlife records you amass. Last night we were treated to Short Eared Owls, Curlews, Ostercatcher, Lapwing, Brown Hare and Hedgehogs aplenty on the way home. Yorkshire Dales, you spoilt us…

Brown Long Eared have similar, some sort of sound function seems logical…
