Sorry to disappoint. 😭 I have a feeling we might come to regret this decision. But hopefully the fact we covered him at all will help redeem him! This period is so overlooked in general.

Also I was trying to make a joke about how the full-figured "Rubenesque" beauty standards aligns roughly with the rise of opera (which is stereotyped as having "fat ladies" as primadonnas). Maybe a poorly worded joke on my part, but I was not trying to imply causality there.

Opera, ballet and theatre in general are things that gradually evolve from the Middle Ages and were not invented under Louis XIV. I'm not a music buff but I gather the word "opera" had a different meaning (lit. "work" in Italian) so it could honestly mean anything. But it's there in the 1500s.

It was fleetingly mentioned in the sources I read but here's an article that mentions her and Henry IV patronising Giulio Caccini and Jacopo Peri. Obviously these are Italian not French composers, and it would not have been opera as we recognise it. indianapublicmedia.org/harmonia/cen....
