It’s crazy that children walking and cycling to school need protecting from adult drivers but it’s the sad reality so it’s good that our Council plans proper enforcement of School Streets.

#KidicalMass in Brighton & Hove today set new records - hundreds of children and adults came along, to call on the council to make everyday cycling easier across the city.

Make the South Downs better for active travel.
Complete the national park’s consultation. Tell them everything that will make it better for 🚶‍♀️🦽 & 🚴🏽‍♀️ .
For example, easier ways to get to the Downs without using a car.

Happy 5th Birthday to Madeira Drive - the seafront road was made open only to people travelling actively exactly 5 years ago today. Motor vehicles were excluded and now it’s a wonderful place to enjoy.

Cycling trips and miles have been similar to the previous year, lower than pre-pandemic. Maybe firmer cyclists are walking instead?

Yep, because "some in London" are thought to be "dangerous" ones like this floating bus stop would never be built. It's in Moulsecoomb, whose Baroness said those words supporting the terrible amendment. The FBS has helped make it significantly less dangerous for people who'd like to cycle.

Oooh. Marine Parade will be closed to vehicles for the very busy Pride weekend. If that can happen, it must be feasible to install a protected cycle lane there 24/7.

Question by Andy MacNae Labour, Rossendale and Darwen To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what assessment she has made with the Secretary of State for Transport on the potential impact of safe walking and cycling routes on rates of economic inactivity. Answer from Simon Lightwood Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department for Transport) The Department has carried out an evidence review of the economic impacts of transport interventions that includes evidence on economic inactivity. The research shows a positive relationship between investing in transport and employment in the surrounding areas, but further research is required to measure the effect on economic inactivity. Active Travel England is delivering a national active travel evaluation that will seek to include a proportionate assessment of the impact of active travel investment on employment. On 12 February, Active Travel England announced £291 million of funding to boost walking, wheeling and cycling across England. It is estimated that the infrastructure funded will lead to 43,000 fewer sick days a year and contribute £9 million every year to the economy by supporting local businesses and making it easier to walk and cycle to work.

Question by Ruth Cadbury Chair, Transport Committee, Chair, Transport Committee Yesterday, the all-party parliamentary group on cycling and walking published its report on social justice as it impacts on vulnerable road users. Injuries to pedestrians could be cut significantly with simple zebra crossings without Belisha beacons. That would align with the 2022 highway code changes. Such crossings are common across the world, and they are being trialled around the corner from this building at the Department for Transport. Will the Government consider amending the guidance for highways authorities so that these crossings can be rolled out across the country? Answer by Simon Lightwood Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department for Transport) The Government agree that everyone should have the opportunity to walk or cycle, whatever their background, and we will obviously study the contents of the report in detail, which correctly highlights some of the ways in which cycle to work schemes, for example, might be reformed. The Government agree that adapted cycles, which are included in the report, also play an important role in providing freedom and independence.

Paul Kohler Liberal Democrat Spokesperson (Transport) To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, if he will make an estimate of the change in the number of miles of (a) public footpaths, (b) bridleways, (c) restricted byways and (d) other public (i) walkways and (ii) cycleways in the UK since 2015. Mary Creagh The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs The public rights of way network provides approximately 140,000 miles of linear access in England and Wales, with 83% found in England and 17% in Wales. In England this consists approximately of: 91,000 miles of footpaths 20,000 miles of bridleways 3,700 miles of restricted byways 2,300 miles of byways open to all traffic (BOATs). In addition, when both the King Charles III England Coast Path and Coast to Coast National Trail are complete, the total length of National Trails in England will be 4,952 miles. Permissive paths also give the public access to large amounts of the English countryside. The National Cycle Network spans 12,000 miles of signed routes for walking, wheeling and cycling including over 5,000 miles of traffic free paths. There are 2,000 miles of canal towpaths in England and Wales. Information on overall lengths of publicly maintainable cycleways and footways, along with changes to the public rights of way network and other walkways and cycle paths since 2015 in England is held by the respective local authority. Further information on public rights of way and other public paths or routes in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland is a matter for the Welsh and Scottish Governments and Northern Ireland Executive respectively.

So the levy on new building developments in the city could soon be used to pay for protected cycle lanes, cycle hangars, safer crossings, modal filters and traffic reduction etc

Don’t know why we weren’t aware before but, while looking at the new @bikeabilityuk.bsky.social cycle training offered by our city to school children, just seen that “pedestrian training” for children is also offered. Is this common?

An extraordinary number of people have objected to badly planned parking bays that would make a seafront road more dangerous for people walking, wheeling & riding bicycles. Our safety-minded Council must now be rethinking the idea.

Question from Mark Sewards MP Labour, Leeds South West and Morley To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, whether she has made an assessment of the potential merits of implementing stronger regulation for e-bikes, including full registration and insurance requirements. Written answer from Simon Lightwood Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department for Transport) The Government has no intention of requiring cyclists, including those who ride Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles, to be registered or to have insurance. This would require a national registration scheme for all cycles which would be complex and expensive to design and administer. It would also be likely to lead to a reduction in the number of people cycling, which would have negative health and environmental consequences. The Government believes that insurance for cycling should remain a matter of personal choice. Cyclists who are not insured are liable for the consequences of their actions should these result in injury or damages to others. Those who ride e-mopeds, or forms of e-cycle that do not comply in full with the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle Regulations 1983, are already required to have insurance and licence plates. Enforcement of these rules is a matter for the police, who have the power to seize illegal e-cycles and to fine individuals who fail to stop when instructed to do so.
