In the end it’s probably a theming thing: Characters from LotR could get away with it because „rustic and cosy“ work well with the shire 😅

For me, fondue is connected to a very real thing: the Swiss alps, winter vacation, etc. and it evokes real world memories of those things. It’s short hand for yodelling and lederhosen which by them selves would probably also break your immersion really fast.

With all due respect: I feel this is a view driven by US storytelling. Vietnam was a fork in the road, Reagan, Bush 1+2, Trumps first term… it’s been decades since other countries saw the US like that.
