We will be attending the Bassetlaw District Council meeting on Thursday to oppose the deeply anti-trans motion submitted by Reform UK councillors. We believe that the motion misrepresents the law and would place members of Bassetlaw’s trans community at a greater risk of harm, at a time when they are already facing heightened hostility. As residents of Bassetlaw, we are appalled by the ongoing demonisation and dehumanisation of the trans community. It is both unfounded and dangerous. The overwhelming majority of perpetrators of violence against women are cisgender men, not trans people, and attempts to conflate the two only serve to distract from the real issues facing women and girls: misogyny, harassment, domestic abuse, and male violence. These are serious problems that require proper resourcing, prevention work, education, and strong community support. Reform’s motion achieves none of these things. Instead, by targeting trans people, who are not the cause of these harms and who themselves face violence and harassment, it diverts attention from genuine efforts to protect women and undermines efforts to keep everyone safe. We oppose any attempt to vilify a small minority of trans people who are just trying to live their lives in safety and with dignity. We will be at the council meeting to stand in solidarity with our trans neighbours, friends, and family members, and we encourage anyone who feels the same to join us.

The motion will be *at least* postponed to the next council meeting on 26th February 2026, unless an extraordinary motion is called.

In the meantime, the people remaining in the hall have been asked to express their views to their local MP.

We're pleased to report that Reform's anti-trans motion was ruled out of order on the basis that the motion's seconder did not attend the meeting!

We are in a county hall in Bassetlaw, Worksop this evening - lobbying against a Reform Councillor bringing forward a motion to "implement the Supreme Court ruling".
