6/ @noaa.gov delivers remarkable value to American taxpayers. Dismantling it is an incredibly dangerous decision. Our elected officials need to hear from you: how do these attacks on ocean science and NOAA's services impact you? Do you value accurate weather forecasts and a healthy ocean? Speak up!

5/ What's happened so far? On Day 1 Trump cut off many of NOAA's grants, then Doge entered NOAA HQ where they accessed IT systems and started censoring the agency's work, just last week hundreds of NOAA's experts were fired without cause, and now DOGE is trying to cancel NOAA's leases across the US.

4/ Maybe the worst news of all: Our oceans are facing a new threat. DOGE is attacking NOAA. NOAA monitors ocean health, protects marine life, and prepares communities for sea level rise. Losing NOAA would be devastating.

3/ In less good news: Marine heatwaves are on the rise and they are stressing out marine life. In the last two years our ocean experienced 3.5X the number of marine heatwaves than in normal years, leading to coral bleaching, fish kills and altered weather patterns. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Ocean extremes as a stress test for marine ecosystems and society - Nature Climate Change
In 2023–2024, widespread marine heatwaves associated with record ocean temperatures impacted ocean processes, marine species, ecosystems and coastal communities, with economic consequences. Despite wa...

2/ In positive ocean news, if you've been worried about the collapse of major ocean current systems due to warming water and melting ice, new research suggests our ocean currents may be stronger than we thought. They may slow down but they will keep on moving. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Continued Atlantic overturning circulation even under climate extremes - Nature
Climate models suggest that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation is unlikely to collapse this century, owing to stabilization from wind-driven upwelling in the Southern Ocean.
