One obvious move would be to criminalize abortion nationwide—note that the Senate could pass that without the votes of Murkowski or Collins. Another would be sweeping nationwide attacks on trans healthcare, maybe just for children, but quite possibly for adults as well. (In order to get Democratic votes, the Senate appropriations bill that was just passed notably killed a bunch of anti trans riders in the House bill). You could also expect a lot of attacks on voting rights. Congress would I think likely just eliminate what’s left of the VRA (the SC may do this…but they also may not.) Republicans might eliminate mail in voting and early voting; they could also pass nationwide and very restrictive voter ID laws. The ACA would probably be dead. It’s quite possible the Republicans would also take the opportunity to further slash Medicaid, and maybe even Medicare. I’d worry about what they’d do to Social Security too. We already know that a lot of people in the Trump White House see this moment as their last, best chance to destroy the New Deal safety net and impose a withering fascist nightmare of austerity forever. The filibuster is not constraining them much. I don’t think we want to learn the extent to which it is though.

An interesting thought about a small silver lining in the Supreme Court's anti-trans passports decision (or, rather, in Jackson's dissent), from a member of my Discord:
I believe there is a silver lining in the decision. Or, rather, in the dissent. In Justice Jackson's dissent, she points out something that Democrats have been afraid to say until now: "The Government also insists that gender identity is not a meaningful basis for identification—strangely begging the question why sex markers are required on passports at all." As far as I am aware, this is the first time a high-profile Democrat has publicly questioned the necessity of tracking everyone's legal sex. If other Democrats listen more to Jackson and less to political consultants, we could see blue states completely eliminate "legal sex" from birth certificates and driver's licenses, which would make it a lot harder for the federal government to enforce transphobic laws, as well as being a massive improvement for nonbinary people and for binary trans people who don't have the resources to navigate the legal hurdles of changing their documents.

bedwyrssong Follow lots of people expressing disappointment that Zohran Mamdani is a Dear Evan Hansen fan. personally speaking I think it is good and healthy for the mayor of New York to have extremely basic taste in musical theatre. I don't want someone in public office worrying about who sang "The Miller's Son" the best. that's my job.

He didn't publicly endorse Harris - that's true.

Did he vote for Harris? He said he did (it was reported in Politico); if you want to think he's lying, that's your prerogative.
“I proudly voted for Kamala Harris on the Working Families Party line,” Mamdani said Tuesday, when asked why he didn’t endorse the Democratic nominee. He insisted his focus was on races poised to be close in New York, as well as Proposition One, known as the equal rights amendment.

Mamdani voted for Harris. And if Harris lived in NYC, she'd certainly be voting for Mamdani.
On the phone, Harris told Mamdani that while they don’t agree on everything, for New York to succeed, he needs to succeed. Mamdani thanked her for her support on the call, saying that he was taking inspiration from her joyful approach to campaigning, the sources familiar with the call said. Harris discussed the call during the first stop of her tour to promote her new campaign memoir. “When he called to thank me, I said, ‘One of the reasons I am excited about your candidacy is you are bringing people in,’” she said. “That is so powerful.”

When I drew this, I deliberately went against the conventions of mainstream political cartooning - the character with my views is fat and balding, the antagonists are conventionally attractive.

So I was fascinated to read this response - a reader literally couldn't understand the comic at first.

Not that the other headlines are portraits in courage, but the New York Times' craven licking of Trump's boots is really something.

The only one to call it an "anti-drug operation"; the only one not to at least put the word "alleged" in the headline.

The US military has now blown up five boats in the Caribbean, murdering 27 civilians.

This is far from the worse thing Trump has done, but I somehow find it the most horrifying.

The danger of letting this murder spree continue is obvious. If the president is permitted to get away with summary executions, he will order many more of them. Once the military gets into the habit of carrying out these illegal orders, there will be little or no resistance to carrying out others. If this president faces no serious opposition and pays no price for these crimes, future presidents will take it for granted that they can abuse their power in the same way.

Today I learned that John Wilkes Booth was there when John Brown, his moral superior in a thousand ways, was hanged. Booth joined a local militia so he could be there to witness Brown hang, and gloat over it.

A bit over five years later, Booth was shot before he could be hanged for killing Lincoln.
