The scary thing about measles is that a measles infection wipes out your immune system of all pre-existing immunity from other diseases and infections. Herd immunity through decades of safe vaccine use is the only thing keeping measles from ripping through the population. Measles specifically infects the cells that are responsible for “remembering” which pathogens your body has encountered before. So they ALL get wiped out, and all you’re left with is cells that remember your measles infection and nothing else. It's referred to as immune amnesia. Every infection, vaccination, and other pathogenic exposure you’ve ever had? Your body no longer knows how to detect them after a measles infection. The only immunity you’ll be left with is immunity to measles. That’s it. Open season for every other pathogen encountered. The only effective solution is mandatory vaccination for acceptance into school. Once that breaks down, polio and everything else rages back.

This was baffling to me for a long time. People seemed willing to die (or kill!) in defense of their beliefs -- until Trump. It dawned on me gradually that they weren't passionate about the specific positions, but about the feelings those positions allowed them: superiority, righteousness, hatred.
Through means I am still incapable of adequately comprehending, Trump has an almost supernatural ability to compel millions of people to reverse long held and passionately defended positions in an instant, without so much as a pretence of a reasoned argument. He just takes a position, and the ideological paperwork is sorted out later. --Carrick Ryan

I think I shook my head or said "yeah," then I heard, "We have information that you are obstructing and ongoing immigration investigation." Jackson says alarms went off in his head. "My first instinct was to want to know what this was about. That it must be a misunderstanding. So I started to tell them about how I've been involved in some pro bono work. Then this voice in my head kicked in and just said, you need to shut the fuck up don't say anything.' The officers never identified themselves. They did ask if they could come inside. "I said absolutely not," Jackson says. "I asked for their names and badge numbers. They said they didn't have to provide that information at this time. So I told them I'd be calling my lawyer and I shut the door behind me." Jackson says his mind started racing. "I needed to know who they were, what agency they were with. Then I remembered that I have the Ring camera. Maybe I could watch the video of the incident and figure out who they were from that." There was no videos. "That's when I learned my VPN had gone down. It wasn't the VPN. Someone had shut off my Wifi." About 15 minutes after the interaction at his front door, Jackson's Wifi was up and running again."

Dustin West on FB: "I was just detained by and my dog was assaulted by plainclothed ICE agents, along with undercover members of the NYPD I believe; while trying to intervene in an ICE abduction on my block. They refused to identify themselves, were masked, produced no signed warrant, and they were in an unmarked van. They literally snatched a family walking their kids home from school off the street, and then kicked my dog and cuffed me and my neighbors for asking questions. They illegally went through my phone, violated multiple Constitutional rights, and then sped off with a family and screaming kids in the back of a van to God knows where. If this can happen on a corner in Harlem at 5:30 in the afternoon, we are in big trouble guys. Protect yourselves and your neighbors anyway you know how. I am absolutely heartbroken, enraged, and disgusted at what my country has become and if you aren't also; you either aren't paying attention or you are part of the problem. EDITED TO ADD: Since this is getting shared around I thought I'd make abundantly clear my takeaway from this experience. It's this: Black and brown people in this country have been subjected to this same type of violence and lawlessness for centuries; with often far worse outcomes than I experienced. The fact the oppressors in power are now willing to also inflict it against a white man of privilege in broad daylight, in the supposed bastion of progressive values that is NYC; only shows how brazen they have become and how dangerous it must be for everyone else not as privileged as I. White people MUST stand in the way of fascism at every turn. We MUST put our bodies and privilege on the line. We MUST be wrenches in the cogs of this horrible machine we helped create. We don't have much time left. *Also videos of the incident are incoming! I got nothing of substance before losing possession of my phone, but I know some neighbors did.
