At 8:59 am EST, 1 Feb 2003, astronauts Rick Husband, William McCool, Michael Anderson, Kalpana Chawla, David Brown, Laurel Clark, and Ilan Ramon were killed when the Space Shuttle Columbia broke apart on re-entry over Texas and Louisiana.

At 11:39 am, 28 Jan 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff, killing all 7 astronauts on board: Dick Scobee, Michael Smith, Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Gregory Jarvis, and "Teacher In Space" Christa McAuliffe.

At 6:31pm est 27 Jan 1967, fire broke out inside the capsule of Apollo 1 as it prepared for its February launch. Astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Richard Chafee were strapped into the command module at the time. All 3 were killed.

3-After World War II, increased air travel led to the construction of the larger Louis Armstrong National Airport (today Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport). While most traffic shifted to Armstrong, Lakefront remains an important public airport serving the region.

2-The airport is a marvel of art deco design. Sadly, much of the exterior detailing was lost in the '60s when they were covered to protect the airport from bombing during the Cold War. The interior, though, with its gilded accents, deco light fixtures, murals, and soaring woodwork, is stunning.

1-Cool Stuff in New Orleans – Lakefront Airport
In 1929, the Orleans Levee Board placed a 10,000 ft retaining wall in Lake Pontchartrain and began pumping in fill. Why? To create a peninsula for New Orleans’ new airport. 5 years and $4.5 million later, Lakefront Airport opened to the public.
