An application relates to the former goods yard and shed at Arundel station which until recently was occupied by a builders-merchants’ company. It has now been acquired by a developer who has submitted a proposal for 27 flats.

This site with its excellent links to public transport and reasonable access to local amenities is just what needed for housing. It is a sequestered, safe for children to play and with easy access to open countryside.
It is disappointing to find that no affordable housing is proposed.

Retaining and preserving the Grade II listed former goods shed on the site must be a priority. The protection of our heritage together with the current needs of our homeless require that the developers and Arun District Council do a great deal better for local people.

Contrast this with Scotland where all young people and children aged 5-21 have been able to travel for free since January 2022 thanks to the Young Persons’ Free Bus Travel Scheme. This initiative removes financial barriers to public transport opening up opportunities for education, work and leisure

Why isn’t it free?
In West Sussex young people can use the 16 to 20 Bus Saver discount providing reduced fares through participating bus operators. While this scheme is a step forward it still requires young people to pay for public transport leaving travel costs as a barrier for many.
