Last night Barnet Greens covered 3 streets & knocked on almost 90 doors. Shoutout to Zahra, our canvassing coordinator in training, Fanxi, our community organiser in training, Ben, Andrew, George & Jack who door knocked for the 1st time with us inspired by last week’s meeting.

Barnet Green Party believes that: •⁠ ⁠We cannot have a fairer, greener country without social justice for the most marginalised in our society. •⁠ ⁠Along with all groups of people, trans people deserve dignity, respect, and the ability to access services. •⁠ ⁠Trans women are women and trans men are men. •⁠ ⁠It is possible to uphold the rights of trans people without impacting on the rights of any other group. We need to protect trans people’s rights and defend their ability to live safe and dignified lives, but things are not going in the right direction. The UK has plummeted in the ILGA Europe rankings for LGBTIQA+ rights, which we once topped as leaders in liberation. The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention and Human Security has published a red flag alert on the hostile actions of the UK government and media upon the trans and intersex communities. Following the recent Supreme Court ruling in the case of For Women Scotland vs the Scottish Ministers, the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has produced a draft Code of Practice to the Equality Act, and opened a consultation. If this draft becomes statutory guidance, it will have a devastating impact on the day to day lives of trans people in the UK, excluding them from settings ranging from specialist support services to gym changing rooms and toilets. It is also likely to expose businesses, services and community groups to a high risk of complaints and litigation, whatever they choose to do. This is bad news, and not only for trans people. The Supreme Court ruling is already negatively impacting women, particularly those who don’t conform to binary ideas of how women present themselves. If the positions put forward in the draft EHRC guidance become statutory guidance, they could easily be co-opted by a marginal groups with an exclusionary ideology that doesn’t protect women, so we need to ensure that this does not happen.

The spirit of resistance, solidarity, and global justice that drove that movement continues to inspire us today. In that spirit, we are reaffirming the Green Party of England & Wales’ long-standing leadership in Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) as a peaceful means of challenging Israel’s apartheid policies. The national Green Party Campaigns Policy Committee has produced a resource: “10 Things You Can Do About the Genocide in Palestine.” Deputy Leader and London Assembly member Zack Polanski, recently addressed thousands at a demonstration in Westminster, emphasising unity across diverse communities. He recognised the powerful presence of the Jewish Bloc at the march. We remember how South Africans from across ethnic and religious backgrounds organised together to end apartheid and build democracy. That legacy continues to guide us. But the work is not over. The vision laid out in the Freedom Charter, for land justice, democratic participation, and equality, remains unfinished. That’s why we support a wealth tax on billionaires and policies for the fair redistribution of land and wealth.
