Proper Job
@barnesarama.bsky.social
Well marbled.
Don't forget the impact of magazines like White Dwarf & Dragon. Their letters pages had a lot of discussion about potatoes and problem players, and much terrible advice. The internet did a huge amount to improve the quality of the discussion (for once).

How would Andrew cope with the digressions comparing the casting of child actors for the new HP series to Arsene's reliance on project youth in the early Emirates days?

So Kier Starmer is a less prestigious interview than @chefreactions.bsky.social? Harsh but fair.

Any Arsenal-supporting celebs you would want to interview? Anne Hathaway seems like she'd be entertaining.

Oh wow.

If it's not prying, was that before or after the election?

And obviously I'd have loved to listen to it, but fair play.

I take it he's not in the line up for Arsecast Extra the next time James is on holiday?
November 20, 2025 at 10:05 AM
Yeah, but I think Arseblog is a much better interviewer than Robbie.
November 19, 2025 at 1:53 PM
I always thought he should have done an interview with someone like Andrew Mangan at Arseblog in the run up to the last election - not about politics at all, but purely about being an Arsenal fan, just to humanise him to the public.

It's probably too late now though.

If you take a precisely judged dose of mushrooms and drive the wrong way around the Magic Roundabout you could end up anywhere, maybe even... www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3Dc...

It's like an Art Nouveau version of Steve Bissette's Swamp Thing.

Lovely work.

I wonder what might have given ministers in the previous government a false sense of confidence and bravado?

Was the damage enough to get them to lay land and die?

And landlords, shareholders, the self-employed, people taking dividends etc.

And while there'd need to be some adjustment for the Self-employed and pensioners, there's a lot of tax left on the table from unearned income.
October 4, 2025 at 12:43 PM
Calling a tax 'National Insurance' doesn't help. We could cut a lot of unnecessary paperwork by just abolishing NI and raising the basic rate of income tax to compensate.

For video games surely it's Football Manager - I knew a guy who played it at work for six months without getting caught.

Ars Magica - the game where players are desperate for their Wizard not to have to do the adventure just so they can get back to the Important Working in their labs.

Sounds like something Trump would say.

A Trump vs Cthulhu series would have the great tag-line 'That is not dead which can eternal lie.'

The West Bank is the real prize though. The tourism value from controlling Nazareth, Bethlehem, Jerusalem etc without any inconvenient residents around would be huge.

Just think of the dollars that could be made selling replica 'Eye of the Needle Gate's to US Evangelicals.

The UK hasn't been self-sufficient in food since the 19th Century.

US States already have way more governmental power and sovereignty than Scotland has had since 1706, so if it's conceivable for the Scots why not for California or NY?
August 27, 2025 at 11:23 PM
Since you'll never get 2/3s of the Senate to support abolishing the electoral college (for example) then the question becomes what changes are possible?

And independence, while horribly disconcerting, would be difficult to oppose in the face of a state-wide democratic mandate.
August 27, 2025 at 11:20 PM
Honest answer, the US has long term problems with media ownership, Citizens United, policing, the bias to small states etc that can't be solved without constitutional reform and those problems prevent any such reform within the current structure.
August 27, 2025 at 11:20 PM
Or it's comparable to saying that if Scotland or Catalunya consistently want a more progressive government than the rest of the country is prepared to elect, then independence is a perfectly legitimate way to achieve that self-determination.
August 27, 2025 at 3:13 PM
A whole bunch of Blue states could secede and do very well for themselves.

From abroad that looks much more viable than trying to fix the constitution against the built-in advantages of the Red states.

I've got a relative who worked in African telecoms and in the 10's he reckoned that the African street was 5 years ahead of Asia, 10 ahead of Europe and 15 ahead of NA in adopting mobile tech into banking and finance.

(I don't know if it still applies, but I wouldn't be surprised.)
August 26, 2025 at 3:05 PM
It's going to be the equivalent of the mobile phone allowing huge swathes of Africa to completely bypass the need for wired infrastructure.

From Britain it looks like the abortion ref reminded the American right that Ireland exists and taps were turned on to start funding Christian-right groups.
