headline from 1938 Adelaide Chronicle article titled "Gay Crocheted Clown Is Easily Made" Lede reads: Any small child would be thrilled to find this gay clown in her Christmas stocking. The toy is easily and quickly made from wool in a simple crochet stitch. Either the body or 'head portions could be used separately for soft balls for the baby.

They say and do stupid things not because they lack intelligence but because they are inattentive to their own shortcomings. They are stupid to the harm that they cause others. This is a type of stupidity, then, that is not intellectual. It’s moral.

For all the pointing fingers and leering (justifiably) at the US, Australians could and should be doing a lot more to avoid falling into the exact same pit
After the Melbourne march, the neo-Nazi group NSN boasted a surge in membership, meaning it was on track to overtake the Liberal Party membership within 18 months. And of course, we cannot forget it is just six years since an Australian white supremacist massacred 51 people and injured 80 others during Friday prayers at mosques in Christchurch. Australia never bothered with much public introspection into how it produced this terrorist.

I'm at a bit concerned at how confidently you lean into the idea that the internet inherently polarises us and that all of this polarisation is artificial and negative. Research is increasingly showing that this framing is simply not true.
Summary of Chapter 2 from the Handbook of Social and Political Conflict Polarization (Vilkins, Bruns, Svegaard, Choucair, and Esau): Polarization is now a key focal concept across disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, with a recent boom in research attention. However, for the most part, the concept remains ill-defined: several core types (issue-based, ideological, and affective polarization) have been identified in political science and media and communication literature. These, in turn, may lead to further patterns of polarized action and interaction (group, perceived, and interpretative polarization), but not all such polarization dynamics necessarily have negative and destructive effects. Rather some can indeed be positive and productive of greater clarity on policy options. Supporting future work in the field of conflict studies, this chapter provides a systematic review of the major types of polarization that have emerged in the current literature; exemplifies their distinctions and interrelations through a brief case study of the Brexit debate in the United Kingdom; and challenges the view of polarization as inherently problematic by introducing a distinction between productive and destructive levels of polarization.
