BarkBlade Games

A dream by @lfsandrin.bsky.social that yearns for reality. One day, a studio that will make your next cult classic. For now, just a pup with a stick and a guy with a keyboard.
Next steps would be to set up the delivery system. Picking up from one location, delivering to another.

And now for dog time:

My goals for today are to finally get this boat moving. I had already done some work in reading how game modes work and how to set up enhanced inputs, now I just need to find the best way to use them to set up throttle controls.

In the meantime, here's another picture of my dog!

And so with that we reached out end result, check out my baby, isn't she beautiful?

After a while I finally got my boat to float correctly no matter what, the boat would constantly tip upside down. This stumped me for a while but then suddenly 10th grade physics hit me like a truck.

Turns out my static mesh was really tall, and so the center of mass was actually above the boat!

Alt: Litterally this was a Eureka moment I had while having a shower. Seriously, any time you have a problem you can't figure out, just go get wet for a while. Don't listen to music or anything, just get wet and let your brain think for a bit. I think people really undervalue what they can come up with of they just give themselves the space to just sit and rest and let your subconscious compile. Having a shower is honestly one of the most meditative experiences of the day for me, I really recommend not treating it like a chore but really as a treat to yourself. Its not like you need to think that hard to scrub yourself so use those spare cycles to just work on a problem!

Even after sorting that mystery out, my boat just kept sinking all the time and I couldn't figure it out. I had tried setting up the pontoon differently, raising the buoyancy coefficient, still nothing. Eventually I found out that my realistic mass was just too much.

And then it was too little.
December 11, 2025 at 6:56 PM
Yeah so, there are specific water collision settings that you need to apply to the water body to get buoyancy to work but apparently a bug got introduced around 5.3 where that collision preset just doesn't exist when you enable the plug-in. You can manually add it in the config file.
Eh Meh GIF
Alt: That totally didn't take me 4 hours to figure out. (I just set all the values to overlap instead to get it to work for the next few videos you will see)

First off, this plug-in is very clearly labelled as experimental, and even when you enable it, Epic clearly says "Yo don't ship with this", but hey their documentation and showcase videos make it look so easy and awesome so what could go wrong?

Oh.

That's the end of the update! Hopefully will have another productive day today.

Oh and here's the picture of my dog I promised, woof!

Oh yeah. Every second Tuesday is "Kung-Fu Movie Night" with a couple of ex co-workers, a tradition started in 2018

This day we watched Tokyo Dragon Chef (2020), a wild ride from start to finish, highly recommend: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YT8l...

Which then brings us to where we are today! Currently setting up a BP_BoatPawn which will serve as the main character in the game, and learning a lot about how possessable pawns work, and setting controls using the Enhanced Inputs systems. My goal for today is to get this sucker moving around.

I then found out about Fab, which is essentially a built in asset store for Unreal. It's pretty neat, you can search around for any object or full on templates and systems to integrated directly into your projects. It's kinda awesome!

UE5 has an experimental water plugin, and I found a great tutorial for setting it up with proper buoyancy and interactions with the landscape tool!

It was an hour long though and I just really wanted to get a Boat pawn moving so I bookmarked it for later

Tossed some water into a level tho. Cool!

Watched a lot of helpful videos on how to organize folders (thrilling I know) and setup my project as a First-Person Template. I'm not sure being able to walk around in this game would be interesting, but I definitely know I'm not interested in managing third-person animations.

For context, I'm a Technical Designer, I largely handle scripting logic, gameplay objects, optimizations, and streaming.

This is the first time however I'm organizing my own long-term project, making my own character controls and sourcing and importing/managing my own assets. Lotsa learning to do.

Boat Game is in UE5, which I thought would be straightforward for me since I've used UE4 for over a decade.

But boy. There is a lot of new stuff in UE5.

I had though to try and build the Space Rocks project again but my brain was rebelling at the thought of doing the same thing we had done last year, so I poked around my existing version for a bit and decided to then set up my UE5 project instead.

This is specifically why I chose two projects!

Train Game is in Game Maker, which requires me to, you know, learn Game Maker. They have some great tutorials actually on their website, like this one I had tried last year for making an arcade space shooter (it's asteroids) gamemaker.io/en/tutorials...

So project updates. I had previously called them SRX and PLP as acronyms for the actual wip names, but that's dumb, y'all don't know what that means anyway. They are now called Train Game and Boat Game, okay? Forget the rest for now.

I freed up space on my C: Drive and installed UE5 engine there, and then went to work on my other drive to make room for projects. TreeSize is the software I sued to find out where the biggest culprits were. It's a very simple and straightforward tool, really recommend it!
December 10, 2025 at 9:01 PM
First step I needed to do is clear out the cobwebs of my computer and install the latest versions of GameMaker and UE5 (which is 5.7 at this point) and find space for my projects.

Only problem is neglect and file hoarding turned all storage space into digital sprawl.

I personally just got sick of not knowing my own limits, and how far I can reasonably push myself before hitting a wall.

So, this is me shooting my shot and making a promise that I'm going into 2026 without regrets, and hopefully with a new understanding of myself.

Enough talk, let's make a game!
December 8, 2025 at 10:50 PM
I'm hoping by posting these updates will serve as both a motivator for me, and also a record and reference for anyone else who wants to start building their own games.

Be aware though, I might be absolutely terrrrrrible at all this. But hey, at least then you'll know what NOT to do!
