The “New Bach Edition”

117 music volumes and 101 Critical Reports have been published as part of the monumental “New Bach Edition”. Thousands of hours of musicological work went into this project, a “towering” achievement.

Very few know that the Teatro Argentina was built on that very Curia of Pompey in Rome where Julius Caesar was assassinated on this very day back in 44BC

This is the theatre where Rossini's, Barber of Seville was premiered in 1816

Remembering Bernard Haitink who would have been 96 today. One of the great conductors of our generation and an extremely very modest man.

We saw him in the audience at Garsington Opera - my wife requested his autograph. 'Why me' he said 'I have done nothing - I'm just sitting here watching!'

Carmen was first performed 150 years ago today at
the Opera Comique. Sadly Bizet died later the same year believing Carmen to be a failure

Handel's last oratorio Jephtha was first performed on this day in 1752 at Covent Garden - the last performance he conducted before going completely blind

The work returned to the Royal Opera House recently. Compare the theatres from 1752 and 2023!
