use your new skills to determine whether information is factual, proper, or worthy of sharing. read everything, even if it’s lies, and use your new comprehension skills to actually piece factual information together, that is media literacy.

encourage the younger generation to read. set aside some time in the day for them to crack open a book, it’s important that reading is encouraged at a young age, the younger the mind, the more power it has.

try to build up your encouragement to read. you don’t have to read a whole book a week, you don’t even have to read a whole chapter a day! 10 pages a day can let you finish about 10-12 books a year, even if you read just 5 books in a year, that’s amazing!

help a friend out. if your friend builds up the courage to come to you and tell you that they struggle with reading, help them out, have reading sessions with your friends, it’s important everyone practices together.

what can we do about this? first, let’s take away the shame in not being able to read. reading is difficult! instead of feeling embarrassed about this, or making others feel like they should be embarrassed, encourage reading in your communities.

about 18% of the adult US population is functionally illiterate, that is over 57 million americans across the country. meaning they can read, but not at the level they are meant to, and because of this their reading comprehension levels are not what they should be.
