For me - let’s say playing rugby - I don’t go into a situation weight up option, but waiting for opportunities to emerge (affordance)… I might try to shaking things up a bit - feed in some deceptive info etc, but it’s seems like affordance perception is the best description…

And I’ve found both operating and coaching jet skis (lifeguard) that the better I get the more my awareness is in things like how the hull interacts with the water - so it’s never a “technique” but a constant exploration of the craft/surface/me interaction - which I think is exploratory??

I’ve been thinking lots about the concept if explore/exploit “trade off” and currently think that in performance there’s actually far more exploration than exploitation anyway… that second before you commit you might be exploring (both visually and kinaesthetically) your options for example

One of the things I started to do was essentially say that they needed to be the judge if their success, in that did they do what they set out to do. So if I wanted to understand an action I’d have to first ask what they were attempting…

It would likely have an innate goal - eg survival - and a degree of decision ability (eg perception-action coupling)….

I had a combination if something like “goal directed” and “decisions”.

But I was then wondering if you had a very simple organism that reacted in more or less in a consistent and way with no habituation, would that still goals/intentions or a skill/decision process? Is that still cognition?

But there are surprises - eg standing in a thorn too didn’t see… I think there are lots of subtler ones too, like seeing a bird in a tree you didn’t expect...

Yeah I guess my interest is how the experience of direct perception could be co-opted to extend functionality? Eg provide more functionality than direct perception alone can account for. But it’s still grounded in the ability to directly perceive…
