Also striking how much the paradigm has shifted since then, for a politician now it's a riskier approach to refuse to enact new laws to tackle every perceived problem. Few dare openly say that sometimes there has to be an acceptable level of risk, or the costs of action outweigh those of inaction.

Reminds me of his story about going on tv that year:

'ADH: Can you not make me look better than I do on television? I look rather scraggy, like a ghost.
Make-up Girl: No.
ADH: Why not?
M-u-G: Because you have a head like a skull.

Stepping down as President wouldn't "ruin" his life. That role is central to inviting and welcoming guests to speak and debate. Bit difficult to do that when you're famous for celebrating the death of a guest whose crime was to disagree with you in debate. Goes against the entire ethos of the OU.
