Yeah I can definitely understand that, fitting a characters entire life into a novel like that did make the important parts feel too short while the mundane got the same screen time. At least you can say you read it! I also just remembered another recommendation for you about murder mermaids.

One of the best I’ve read this year was Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman. It’s a gothic horror set in an alternate history during the bubonic plague. A deadbeat dishonored knight, a gay alcoholic priest, and a little girl who talks to angels have to travel across France to find safety.
