When asked about the percentage of national gdp going to the EU budget, the average citizen coming to the European Commission's Visitors Centre (where I work) replies something between 5% and 30%. Economic literacy is generally very low. People have no idea of the orders of magnitude either.

Especially in social media, where propaganda spreads by keywords

Language manipulation is a fundamental, powerful tool of autoritarian propaganda. There are words in German and Italian that you just can't use anymore. Not acknowledging this is playing in the hands of these people.

Kristian, language is a living organism and absorbs inputs from its environment (trust me, I'm an expert). "Patriot" just does not mean the same anymore in all crowds. Again, you find swastikas in Zoroastrian temples and on Jewish tombs.

Right wing parties in west. europe, btw, would neve take arms for their "homelands". They're wealthy arseholes with bank accounts in tax havens. Their electorates are mixed, but they all refuse any kind of change and are all against military expenditures or draft. But they are all "patriots"!

The right wings occupies positions that should stay vacated. We should never give credit to their claims, bc, between the original and the copy, people choose the original.
I agree that there are many responsible, caring people. In our neck of the woods, tho, they aren't "the patriots".

My point exactly. In countries that do not experience any of this, where there's peace and wealth, patriots are either the "my-country-first" morons, or the corrupt thugs whom they follow or vote for.
We will have to find another word for people who love and want to protect their communities.

In an ideal world, in which patriotism is the love for a community, I'd also argue that. Unfortunately, this patriotism does not exist in real life anymore.
Fascism has taken over the word "patriot", a bit like swastikas, and now it's lost to decent people.
