Today, James Frith MP led a Westminster Hall debate on the impact of AI on Intellectual Property. We were glad to see so many MPs raise authors' concerns regarding the use of their work to develop AI platforms without compensation, transparency or consent.

Collective licence to ensure UK authors get paid for works used to train AI
A pioneering alternative to the opt-out system proposed by the government is supported by publishers and writers and is set to be available for use this summer
UK licensing bodies have announced a “pioneering” collective licence that will allow authors to be paid for the use of their works to train generative AI models.
The Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) – which is directed by the Publishers’ Licensing Services (PLS) and the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS), representing publishers and authors – will develop the licence, set to be the first of its kind in the UK. Continue reading...

We welcome news about the joint venture between the Copyright Licensing Agency, Publishing Licensing Services & @alcs.co.uk to develop a collective licence for generative AI. This announcement is timely and demonstrates that licensing for AI is possible with transparency & remuneration for authors.
