I've not seen this written up yet but will share a link here if I do. In the meantime I've tried to explain why this ruling could mean things could improve in the future.
In December 2022, the Scottish parliament passed the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill. This bill, if enacted, would reform the 2004 Gender Recognition Act process by which people in Scotland can legally change their gender, including by removing the requirement for a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria - thereby making it easier for trans people to legally transition. The legislation was passed by the Scottish Parliament but blocked by the UK Government after the Secretary of State for Scotland, Alister Jack, issued a ‘section 35 order’ on the basis that the Gender Recognition Reform Bill would have an adverse effect on reserved matters. In particular, one of key arguments presented was that the bill would affect the matter of ‘equal opportunities’ – specifically the Equality Act 2010, which makes ‘sex’ a protected characteristic. The Supreme Court ruling says that the provisions in the Equality Act 2010 that refer to 'sex' refer to sex at birth, and are different from 'certificated sex' from a Gender Recognition Certificate. As a result this looks like it negates one of the main arguments for blocking the Gender Recognition Reform Bill. TL; DR - Although the Supreme Court ruling has said that trans people with a Gender Recognition Certificate don't benefit from all of the 'sex' provisions of the Equality Act 2010, in doing so it has potentially removed one of the main legal arguments that has made it difficult to improve the Gender Recognition process to make it easier to get a certificate. This is why there is still cause to be hopeful that progress can be made on improving the lives of trans people.

If you have the time I definitely recommend visiting an outdoor onsen in the cold Japan winter air - especially if its snowy. Kurama, a short train ride north of Kyoto is very picturesque
