I've thought about this a lot lately. I'm pretty able to brush off any weirdness about furries but I'm deeply ashamed of my hater phase, which I now see as a desperation to be liked combined with a fear of my own sexuality. Like wow I am SO glad I grew out of that

Yeah, same. I have mixed feelings about maintaining separate personas, but otoh, I've sort of accepted it as part of having to be employable in a society that skews puritan. And in a sense it gives me some freedom, like I can explore ideas I wouldn't necessarily feel comfortable with otherwise

I guess I see this cultural stuff as cyclical. Younger people coming up and being outraged at weirdness (or feeling like they have to perform outrage so no one figures out the weird thing they're into). The fandom IS a lot more crowded than it used to be, but I think it's because we made it look fun

To be honest I feel like being nice about the more unusual kinks was a brief respite. The baby/diaperfurs were a pretty regular subject of sneering in the 90s and 00s too, when furry was very much for nerds. "At least we're not like THOSE weirdos" is evergreen
