Interests are science, libraries, education. Passions are travel, the theatre and kajukembo. Cats are great, too.

I posted this, not just as a concerned US citizen but as a pro in the science & medical fields related to communicable disease, from learning ASL early in life to communicate w/ a sibling who lost hearing to a virus adverse event to supporting top research as a biomed librarian. Chilling.

Mental break Monday. Seeing my college student & travel partner back to school from Spring Break 📚, and channeling the cleansing smell of snow as another of mine visits his prospective Alaskan university ❄️.
Cats, cooking, exercise & restoring the house today.
Stay strong, stay healthy!

The brain drain begins.
It’s notable, too, who is leaving.

“The thing about being a historian is that it’s not that you know what will happen, but you know what can happen,” Shore, who teaches modern European intellectual history, explained in an interview with CNN.

“The trend was particularly pronounced among early-career researchers.” On our recent travels, we met an engineer who had left his own country early in his career when jobs dried up. He thrived in his new home, but here 20 years later, he never returned. Science will continue, but where will 🇺🇸 rank

Enjoy this flyover view of Greenland from our flight yesterday.
Although aware of who was visiting at the time, we could enjoy the beauty & timelessness of the land w/o those news images for the moment. 🇬🇱

1st things 1st: returning to the US thru customs as a citizen went smoothly, but it’s insane to take precautions about what is & isn’t on your phone. Our flight even made an announcement of it.
Away from domestic US news was a welcome mental break, but reminders abounded we are all interconnected.

As anticipated. A great uncle of mine has one of his hand-carved bowls in the Smithsonian. Will it represent old-fashioned, hard-working early American values or be purged as a tribute to native peoples & their ingenuity? Will his work at Dollywood & her affiliation with libraries nix his exhibit?

There’s been a tremendous effort to preserve data that is under siege. We’ve seen what the federal govt has removed already in just a matter of weeks & months.
The Data Rescue Project is sharing their counter moves. Libraries & museums are in current focus.
