You want to stay away from that.”

An excerpt from Bernard Hickey's newsletter The Kaka today: "A record-high 201 New Zealanders emigrated each day on average in the year to the end of July, with 58% going to Australia. Australia’s labour market is now accelerating ahead of New Zealand’s stalled market, further widening the 30% wage premium over the Tasman and providing job openings there while there are none here. Both long and short term policy decisions by the New Zealand and Australian Governments and Reserve Banks have driven the widening gap over both the last 30 years, and the last two years in particular. Australia introduced compulsory savings, kept strong unions and kept a capital gains tax on residential property. The Reserve Bank of Australia stayed focused on both jobs and inflation. New Zealand did none of that. Australia also emerged from Covid with lower interest rates and more expansive government spending. New Zealand did the opposite, hiking interest rates at the same time as a fiscal policy tightening."

Doc of the day: SMOC reversal A paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal by European and US climate scientists titled: “Rising surface salinity and declining sea ice: A new Southern Ocean state revealed by satellites.” has found a major reversal in ocean circulation detected in the Southern Ocean. The study’s main finding is both surprising and alarming: since 2016, a sustained increase in surface salinity has been detected in the region between the polar and subpolar gyres of the Antarctic Ocean. This change in water composition suggests that the deep ocean circulation in the Southern Hemisphere—known as the SMOC—is not only being altered, but has reversed. That is, instead of sinking into the depths, surface water is being replaced by deep water masses rising to the surface, bringing with them heat and carbon dioxide (CO₂) that had been trapped for centuries. “We are witnessing a true reversal of ocean circulation in the Southern Hemisphere—something we’ve never seen before,” explains Antonio Turiel, ICM-CSIC researcher and co-author of the study. “While the world is debating the potential collapse of the AMOC in the North Atlantic, we’re seeing that the SMOC is not just weakening, but has reversed. This could have unprecedented global climate impacts.” Turiel said via this ICM (Institut de Ciències del Mar)

Tightening of benefits for unemployed young people In a surprise change, Social Development Minister Louise Upston has announced 18 and 19-year-olds will now have their Jobseeker and emergency benefits tested against their parents' incomes. The policy is forecast to save the government about $163 million over four years, but the income levels parents will be tested against have not yet been decided by Cabinet.

The strength and longevity of Roman 'marine' concrete is understood to benefit from a reaction of seawater with a mixture of volcanic ash and quicklime to create a rare crystal called tobermorite, which may resist fracturing. As seawater percolated within the tiny cracks in the Roman concrete, it reacted with phillipsite naturally found in the volcanic rock and created aluminous tobermorite crystals. The result is a candidate for "the most durable building material in human history". In contrast, modern concrete exposed to saltwater deteriorates within decades.
