I certainly see why Adorno synthesizes Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud, as they all challenge liberal-bourgeois conceptions of history. I was a little surprised to find that Nietzsche hadn’t read Marx as his historical approach seems dialectical to me (if not materially-driven).

“One of the specific contradictions of this society is the contradiction between expulsion (the expulsion of whole groups towards the spatial, mental and social peripheries) and integration (which remains symbolic, abstract and "cultural"). It’s a contradiction… in the process of being deciphered.”

“But in order to change something, is it not first of al necessary to change everything, i.e. to change the whole first? Of course it is.”

What I didn’t like:

• The author denies the relevance or even existence of real class struggle today
• He ignores the very real neoliberal attacks on the body (American prisons, IMF structural adjustment programs, etc.)
• Generally not very rigorous thought or writing

3/5 overall

What I liked:
• Compelling case for the rise of psychopolitics with and within neoliberalism, as part of a growing emphasis on management of the mind over the body vs. Foucault’s disciplinary society
