I have also recently started reading Superman and did some research I've been recommended the John Byrne run which takes place in the reboot of DC right after Crisis on infinite earths. Man of Steel is a mega collection of his origins. That's where I'm at right now it's a good read

According to the original manual of Super Mario Brothers for the NES the only difference between Mario and Super Mario is when he eats a mushroom and grows big. Mario in Smashy bros is in fact in his big state thus Eliwood is correct he is Super Mario
