Scientists, policy and communication experts work together to bridge the gap between science and society. Swedish account: @ostersjocentrum.bsky.social
"Zero catches in all habitats" – @icesmarine.bsky.social advice on European eel remains unchanged. However, the new Swedish management plan presented this autumn still allows for commercial fishing for soon-ready-to-spawn eels.

How big a risk is it reasonable to take – with our fish stocks, our marine environment, our food security? How seriously do fisheries ministers take their targets? How seriously do the ministers take their own rules? Next week EU’s ministers meet to make a deal on Baltic Sea fisheries 2026.

Management of fisheries in the Baltic Sea has generally failed to meet its objectives. Two recently published scientific articles dive deeper into the reasons. Welcome to a seminar where @hsvedang.bsky.social and Eva Papaioannou present the findings and discuss the implications for future policy!

"Heading in the right direction" – fisheries researchers Sara Söderström and @hsvedang.bsky.social comments on the proposed TACs from @ec.europa.eu. For several stocks the proposed catches are significantly lower than the range presented by @icesmarine.bsky.social.

A new discovery about how sea spray forms on coastlines may change our understanding of the oceans’ impact on climate. In coastal areas, aerosol concentrations have been greatly underestimated — but globally, they may have been overestimated. www.su.se/stockholm-un...

Total allowable catches for herring in the Gulf of Bothnia would have to be cut by 62% next year in order to comply with the European Union’s rules for highest acceptable risk. That is one conclusion from the assessment of fish stocks and forecasts over MSY presented today by ICES.

Coastal zones are identified as important natural carbon sinks globally, but in brackish environments like the Baltic Sea, knowledge of coastal carbon sequestration is limited.

This new study shows that shallow and partly enclosed Baltic bays are significant sinks for carbon and nutrients.

The discussion on regulating #PFAS in the EU is vivid. What came out as a proposal to ban almost all production and use of the substances, might now end up as a less comprehensive regulation. What does science say about the spreading of PFAS and the risks involved? www.su.se/stockholm-un...

Bladderwrack from the Baltic Sea has been sent into space as a first step towards understanding its mysterious reproduction. "An absolutely breathtaking experience," says Professor Lena Kautsky. The scientists next steps is to send bladderwrack to ISS for a longer period of time.
