the way to tell whether your card is active/passive is usually by price and whether or not it uses bifurcation

if it requires pcie bifurcation, it's probably passive and cheaper

if it's more expensive and doesn't use bifurcation, probably active

depends on whether or not you're using a passive or active card

a passive card is split (say 16 lanes by 4 drives = 4 lanes each) so each drive you add would be 4 more lanes

if using an active card, that uses a set number of lanes (usually 16) and will always consume those lanes
