Is that low prioritization because of the impact it has on our society? Or because of how much effort doing something about it would require?

There's a huge middle ground between "AI is fake and has no use" and "AI will solve all worldly problems". I think Casey is saying that neither of those ends are true, and that those that think otherwise are self-delusional. People should question AI, but that's not the same to believing it's a sham
