Our results provide cross-modal insight into the DBS response of Parkinson’s disease, showing that effective stimulation sites are maximally engaged with a specific brain network in the #highbeta frequency band.

We show that this network, once identified, is capable of #predicting the #DBS response across DBS centers, #surgeons, and even #MEG devices.

We show that the identified network spatially resembles the one characterized by #fMRI and that it predominantly #communicates in the #highbeta range, which has already been identified as key for DBS response, before.

To answer this question, we analyzed the lion’s share of the globally available #MEG-LFP data (n = 100 hemispheres) to characterize the #DBS response network in Parkinson’s Disease in both, the #spatial and #temporal domain.

Very cool subthalamic lesion study relating anatomical location and connections to symptom-specific outcomes in PD: similar topographies as in my amazing colleague‘s @nanditharajamani.bsky.social recent work on symptom-specific DBS outcomes (doi.org/10.1038/s414...)

As expected #Image-guided estimation of DBS outcomes provided good results. But: the #dryEEG approach estimated larger amounts of variance in DBS outcomes in a multivariate linear model

Once defined, we can now use this #pattern to estimate #DBSoutcomes in #unseen patients. Would the model be able to identify the optimal DBS contacts?🥁🥁🥁 Indeed: in all of the five cases tested, the model selected the optimal DBS contact correctly!🥳

Using this #dryEEG setup, we recorded DBS-#evokedpotentials in 58 hemispheres in people with #Parkinson’s disease and computed a model which represents the optimal DBS-evoked #responsepattern associated with maximal DBS improvements
November 14, 2024 at 1:38 PM
Second, instead of relying only on one ROI (e.g. M1) we now leverage the #spatial and #temporal pattern across all channels (EP-Map) to select the optimal DBS contact

In this new paper, we set out with @lukasgoede.bsky.social , @andreashorn.bsky.social and others to test whether we could use #dryEEG to record DBS-evoked potentials to guide programming. Indeed, a dry-EEG system can be mounted in minutes, so this could scale even to #outpatient clinic settings!

Similar to this strategy, folks have mapped #evokedresponses to DBS using #MEG and #EEG, before. #MEG is similarly costly/scarce than #fMRI, and conventional #EEG may be cumbersome to mount (~1 hour to prepare a session). doi.org/10.1016/j.br...

Several strategies have been pursued to find the best setting faster and in a more objective fashion. First, #ImageGuidance is currently en vogue to accomplish this. We localize electrodes and choose the contact(s) closest to an a-priori defined sweet spot
