I forgot to mention that obviously we still have a satellite dish! We use Freesat boxes in the rooms. I got extraordinarily lucky when I bought my house in that every room already had ethernet and coax, so after a lot of pissing about every room has cable and satellite TV and wired interwebs.

Anyway assuming nothing goes horribly wrong (which is extremely unlikely – the surgeon told me that "literally no-one your age dies during this kind of heart surgery"), so I'll see you all in a day or two when I wake up. Keep the place tidy for me will you. /12 END

If repair is not possible, they will replace the valve. I have chosen a mechanical replacement as opposed to a biological one, as it should last the rest of my life instead of 15 years, and I'll feel like a cyborg. Downside is that I'd have to take blood thinners forever. Hope the repair works. /10

Tomorrow morning I will have open heart surgery. I will be put to sleep, my rib cage will be cut open (my mum forgot to install hinges for easy access), they will fish about a bit to find my heart, and then they can hopefully repair the valve. This fix should have a very high chance of success. /9

And just as well. My symptoms have been getting worse, to the point where a 20 minute walk with the dog can be enough to make me feel like I've run a half marathon. I'm constantly fucking knackered. And mentally I'm often not all there – I have been coding recently and made all kinds of mistakes. /8

She explained that I have what is known as a Bicuspid Aortic Valve, where this valve only has two flaps instead of three. I like to say that instead of looking like a Mercedes, mine looks more like a Mazda. It's a genetic defect that around 1% of people have, and it occurs more often in men. /5

In the heart clinic waiting room, the assistant said "Dr No will see you now". Thankfully not the dude from James Bond, but in fact a lovely lady of Vietnamese heritage called Ngo. She lathered me up in gel and gave me an ultrasound, and confirmed that my heart was broken 💔 NO NOT IN THAT WAY /4

As I started to leave, the doctor pulled a stethoscope out and asked if she could just have a listen to my heart. She said she could hear a murmur. I was excited at the thought of R.E.M.'s debut album pumping through my veins. She referred to me to the local heart clinic. /3

Well technically it all started before I was even born, but let's rewind exactly a year back to November 2024. I was feeling depressed, I was feeling exhausted, and I could feel my heart beating throughout my whole body. /1
