Sweep/skull rowing on rivers and lakes is super-competitive, but can be a lot of fun if you join a boat club with a good community around it. Coastal rowing (perhaps not so convenient for you) is generally awesome and you'd be near-guaranteed to be sharing a boat with lovely, chill folks.
