I do agree that not all institutions should fully fund every PhD position just because they can. There’s a whole other discussion to be had about academic advisors and dissertation committees and their ability to actually nurture those they advise into fully fledged historians.

I’m in a history MA program and I can assure you a lot of institutions want historians and departments are more focused in preparing grads for non-academic jobs including teaching, research, museum and curating, archiving, etc.
