New York City is a good deal more Democratic than Virginia to say nothing of the fact that one is running in essentially a three man race while the other has only two. It's still going to be pretty difficult to draw too many conclusions from just comparing two races.

Outside of the South LBJ had massive political capital post in 64-65, having won every state outside of the deep south save AZ and had the press largely on his side on most issues. Biden couldn't even get 30% of the vote in WV. He didnt have the leverage against Manchin that LBJ did in his day.
