What's wild is I adore everything else this game does. Love all the sidequests (particularly the bounties) and the cosmetics are best in class. Combat is functional and I like this game's weapon hierarchy over (iirc) Tsushima's stance system.

Single missions start feeling like two or three sandwiched together so characters can ride horses and talk more about the half-baked revenge plot.

Every main mission I worry I'll have to spend 90% of a mission's runtime in transit. This game LOVES the "walk-and-talk" style of exposition to its extreme detriment.

I mean it could still fall off. They could screw up DQII, make the Cave to Rhone too easy or something. But at least with DQI, they made something remarkable. The changes expand the world and story without doing harm to DQI's unique structure.

DQI, in all earlier incarnations, has a unique sparseness that comes from being one playable character traipsing around a small world map. I'm sure there was a temptation, be it internal or external, to staple a bunch of party members and new mechanics onto what was there. They muffled that voice.
