Seat of my pants DMing in the TTRGP space
Strong agree! I listen back a week later to write my recap, and it's a hoot. All the little asides and the one-liners - my table is crazy quotable.

There's no such thing as an overpowered party... I can ALWAYS make the encounter deadly.

I am profoundly lucky in that our table has been playing D&D every Friday for 9 odd years (except December, we take December off) so we're all used to each other and there is a lot of trust there.

work out ways to stay and remain basically palatable to everyone else. The monk on my table just punched the party's Castalan for a childish ass reason (very in character), but they're glued on to the cause, so now they have to navigate what's happened and how the others feel about it.

My prime directive for the table is always "You need to find a reason for your character to WANT to be on this adventure." If there's a reason for your character to want to be there, generally it doesn't matter what their motives or 'alignment' are; the desire to be there will make that character

Now the devils want it (they don’t know why), Shar wants it REAL bad, Mystra of course wants to know how it was done and everyone is trying to hide its existence from kings, generals and other power hungry dudes…

They’ve had a big week.

So he sucked the spell plague out and stored it in the crystal. Thus inventing the spell plague grenade. It’s completely stable and transportable… but if you break it open, you infect an unknown area will spell plague.

So he CAN in fact cure the spell plague. He just makes a bomb doing it.

It’s a completely homebrew substance that they mine in wave echo cave called Aether and it’s got a load of properties. One of them is it can store magic in it… so when the wizard met a fellow who had just been infected with the spell plague, he figured, what the hey, maybe I can save this guy!

I think I’d probably call him daddy

Respectfully.

My eldest is a DM in their own right; they have to hear a LOT of stuff from me! We need a 'super secret DMs business' group somewhere where we can brag about our plot twists!
December 5, 2025 at 2:12 AM
The other DM and I talk about plot stuff a lot, but we're also always trying to avoid spoilers and make sure the other one has a great player experience LoL so it can sound really weird this conversation with NO detail in it at all trying to get feedback on ideas LoL

Oh no no , I’ve given you the wrong impression. We have one table, two campaigns and we alternate weekly, so I run “The guardians of the grove” (homebrew) fortnightly and he runs “Call of the Neathedeep” (module) on the other Friday.

But he also makes my maps!!!

But yeah, they’re funny know 🙈 I don’t know how they put up with me, honestly.

They are aware that I slide into sessions sideways on a wing and a prayer with two sticky notes and some song lyrics around which to build a plot.

We actually have a second DM on our table and he’s big into making maps so he will often put something cool together for me.
