The U.S. government brutalizes innocent people, especially to enforce unjust laws that drastically exacerbate global poverty.

It's not a charity, a mutual aid group, or an effective means of alleviating human suffering. It's a violent, fascistic, authoritarian organization.

A post in r/calvinandhobbes 22 hours ago titled "The post I hoped to avoid. The end of the C&H Subreddit." The mod who made the post describes repeated copyright takedown notices directed at the subreddit, and how they are therefore banning new posts so as to prevent this from leading to users getting their accounts banned.

The progressive article of faith that increasing taxes on the rich would do enormous good is so bizarre to me. The states those taxes would go to do enormous harm & engage in brutal violence. Their policies are heavily shaped by rent seeking & cronyism. Sure, maybe tax revenue gathered by some ideal state that acts in accord with a beautiful cosmopolitan & egalitarian theory of justice would be beautiful. But that state doesn't exist. Taxes go to the state you have, not the state you want. If you want to coercively take wealth from rich people just fucking rob them & use the loot for stuff that's actually good. Don't say that their money is best spent by a mass incarcerating military empire that violently restricts migration. I trust random criminals more than I trust the state, and if you don't I question whether you believe the global poor matter.

The Myth of the Rule of Law John Hasnas Commitment to the rule of law is one of the core values of a liberal legal system. The adherents of such a system usually regard the concept of a "government of laws and not people" as the chief protector of the citizens' liberty. This Article argues that such is not the case. It begins with what is intended as an entertaining reprise of the main jurisprudential arguments designed to show that there is, in fact, no such thing as a government of laws and not people and that the belief that there is constitutes a myth that serves to maintain the public's support for society's power structure. It then suggests that the maintenance of liberty requires not only the abandonment of the ideal of the rule of law, but the commitment to a monopolistic legal system as well, The Article concludes by suggesting, in a somewhat fanciful way, that the preservation of a truly free society requires liberating the law from state control to allow for the development of a market for law.

Good lord.
One is led today, in the same manner, to stand neither with vigilante murder nor with institutional greed. However, this answer is not enough. In light of such political violence, it is necessary to defend the state, despite its inefficient bureaucracies of forms, functionaries and guarantees. The state must be defended because it can actually help people through the social safety nets it provides, however imperfectly.

The scale of factory farming is staggering.

Billions of chickens tortured each year.

Millions of fish & land animals.

This means the scale of the suffering caused is enormous.

Therefore, even if animals matter very little, this still adds up to a big problem.
