All about the nature, landscape, history and people of this fascinating part of the central highlands
I am quite used to seeing photographs of the inundated floodplain between Kingussie and Insh, but a remarkable series of photographs by Alessandro Delicata in the Badenoch and Strathspey Herald yesterday show that the same thing can happen in Strathspey www.strathspey-herald.co.uk/news/picture...

My current reading (a very welcome Christmas present).

I find this book fascinating, especially the gaps in recording which hint at a vast amount of information still to be discovered.

Something more up-to-date: The "Strathspey trilogy" by C J Halliday (2018-2020). Invaluable in my opinion.

Another older book, written in a style which is a long way from the rigorous, evidence-based approach currently favoured. However highly entertaining, with some gems to reward a careful read.

This book captures the excitment of studying wildlife in the Cairngorms and particularly in Strathspey where many of the observations were made. Now hopelessly out of date but still a wonderful snapshot of post-war nature study. Why was it not part of the New Naturalist series?

I have consulted this book more times than any other in my collection, and still find myself learning from it. It remains the best overview of the status of birds in the district although much has changed since its publication in 1995.
