Apparently the Peri dev is insanely queerphobic, which is kinda funny because if I had to guess randomly I would've told you the game was made by a transgender lesbian based entirely on style and subject matter

ah i def don't care abt that stuff at all either i just think we care abt the artistic content of games a lil differently. which is cool! thank u for indulging me in this convo i enjoyed it a lot :-)

between elden ring and nightrein (conceptually), because elden ring plus dark souls but roguelike doesn't feel like "trying something" to me. ofc counting your chickens before they hatch and employing buzzwords is a bit foolhardy on my part but i think it's necessary evil to get real discussion

but i'm happy it worked for you more!! idk if i think iterative is itself a pejorative, more that if a project feels like only iteration i value that less than something that's trying to do more, & elden ring didn't feel like that to me unfortunately. i will say tho this does point to a clear diff

that's a good point!! i guess my distaste for the open world stuff does kinda lead me to fail to consider it as a genuine endeavor. and i don't *really* ever consider artist intention beyond context; it doesn't really matter to me why they went open world, i just know it feels careless 2 me

i was particular interested in your discussion of iteration! maybe repetition is a better word for me to use? it very much felt to me like elden ring was happy just to do more of the same rather than build on and evolve from its predecessors which is also the basis of my skepticism of nightrein!

for mechanical-narrative engagement despite their unpopularity among fans for being too janky and annoying. i feel like the older fromsoft games were much less roll+r1 focused which to me feels like a capitulation to the consumer, which as a demon's souls fans i'm sure you can feel as well

mm that's interesting to me because i find the defenses of elden ring are often consumer focused, specifically the game kinda plays the hits for fans, whereas i find its creative project feels subordinate to market demand! i miss stuff like the bed of chaos and wolnir that sacrificed difficulty
