We love backseat gaming, do you?
Pinned
Do you like videogames? Specifically, watching people be only somewhat competent at them? Maybe even getting mad at them for not playing the way you would? That's pretty much what we do! We're Ria and Nas, we play games, we sometimes get on each other's nerves, but we always find a way to have fun.
Having admirers does wonders for the self-esteem. Unless they're Matsumae, because how should you believe that, Atsu, those samurai always sneer at you, Master Yoshida is A HANDSOME LIAR and we're getting carried a little away with this post.

A neat thing #GhostOfYotei does is having different features restricted to a specific region. You find puzzle boxes across Teshio Ridge, because they are related in-story to the Kitsune. You gain access to the Oni's Flame in Ishikari Plain, because of similar in-story reasons.

After this weekend, we're heading deep into Christmas territory. At BackSeethers HQ, this means looking out for deals on videogames. While we're not actively taking suggestions, we'd love to know what you'll be playing during the holidays. :)

#DidYouKnow: The Kitsune's shinobi in #GhostOfYotei are influenced by the seminal 1985 Michael Dudikoff cult classic American Ninja, only set in Edo-period Japan. #FakeGameTrivia

It can take the smallest thing to instantaneously click with someone: you share an interest in a piece of media; you've unknowingly lived near each other; they're able to play a song that reminds you of your dead mother; you both like chicken soup. The smallest things, indeed.

We enjoy story parallels in videogames, or any media, really. #GhostOfYotei, for example, seems to have assigned different bosses to each of Atsu's family members. We already dealt with the Oni, who was mainly responsible for her father's death. Going to Teshio Ridge, well...

#DidYouKnow: To cut down time on snow rendering, the developers of #GhostOfYotei took a page out of the Old Hollywood playbook and created an asbestos simulation. Looks virtually the same, but it's easier to control, not to mention it barely kills anyone anymore. #FakeGameTrivia

Intergenerational friendships are beneficial for both young and old people. The former learn that age doesn't always dull one's edge. The latter regain valuable perspective they might have forgot. Not every elder has amazing detective skills, though. That's a harmful stereotype.

More games in any genre should have other genres spill into them once in a while. You put on #GhostOfYotei for a classic revenge story full of action; you definitely don't expect dipping into survival horror by having to run for your life from an unkillable demon bear.

This weekend felt simultaneously too long and not enough to do anything meaningful over it. Have you ever had such an experience? Feel free to share, if you have. (:

#DidYouKnow: The great commercial success of its predecessor is the main reason #GhostOfYotei can afford having boat travel animations. #FakeGameTrivia

No relationship is perfect, and no participant in one is perfect. Sometimes, your partner might piss you off and they'll take longer to own up to it than you'd like. In the meantime, it helps to take the edge off when you have a bunch of NPCs in a videogame to utterly demolish.

We don't get into it during today's #GhostOfYotei episode, but it would be kind of cool if, going forward with the franchise, sidequests could have choice-based endings, akin to the Witcher series. No need for a karma meter or anything, it would just add replay value, at least.

#DidYouKnow: Additional weapons were considered for #GhostOfYotei, in order to flesh out both combat and traversal. For example, Atsu would've used a hachiwari to further damage armored enemies, and an ōtsuchi to open up barred doors in fortified camps. #FakeGameTrivia

In our teens, we tend to overthink and overcomplicate the way we approach our peers. Best example we have would be crushes. You'd do anything but talk to the person you like openly. For example, the "Vagabond" in #GhostOfYotei is clearly Takezo, yet he tries to fool us still.
November 18, 2025 at 2:28 PM
#GhostOfYotei has sprinkled a bit more variety in its locations. Caves are of varying sizes, hideouts aren't mostly in forests, enemies take advantage of higher ground. It's not much, but it feels just right.

Here in BackSeethers HQ, Nas is of the opinion that bears are the most dangerous predator. Not because of size or strength, though; bears lull you into a false sense of security. They're chonky, often clumsy, they have plush toys based on them. One cuddle couldn't hurt, right?

#DidYouKnow: According to early scripts, the Spider Lily General in #GhostOfYotei had lost a lover to an adversary, instead of a daughter to illness. It was his mistake, still. They rewrote it when an intern pointed out they'd made a Spider-Man What-If? story. #FakeGameTrivia

Sometimes, life will throw stuff you're utterly unprepared for at you. Whether you decide to take a step back, regroup, and deal with it later, or dive straight in, consequences be damned, just know you'll get through it. Oh, also make sure there aren't any firearms involved.
November 14, 2025 at 3:13 PM
Before #GhostOfYotei came out, somewhere along our playthrough of the previous game, we talked to each other about the convenience of adding loadouts for different armors and charms. Not that we've been using the option so far. It's just nice to have it.

#DidYouKnow: #GhostOfYotei was supposed to feature a first person fishing minigame, as with building fire, cooking, and forging blades. It was scrapped because, if implemented, it would've pushed the release date to November 2026. #FakeGameTrivia

Devoting oneself to another can feel incredible, but there are some limits as to how strongly one does it. It's fine to be devoted to a partner; not so much when it's a legendary duelist. Naming oneself a disciple of said duelist and fighting at cinematic locations is pushing it.
November 11, 2025 at 2:28 PM
It takes skill and hard work to make postgame content not feel like a chore. A game like #GhostOfYotei - open-world, featuring several distinct regions - needs to show the player that, just because they've defeated the main bad guy, the stories and lives of others will continue.

You think you're the coolest, just walking around, twirling that fire katana, until a giant dude starts swinging an odachi as long as you're tall and you realize how unprepared for this you are. Well, to hell with preparations. Time to brute force a boss fight!

#DidYouKnow: A patched out item flavor text in #GhostOfYotei made a reference to Fullmetal Alchemist and Roy Mustang's flame alchemy. Check for gloves in your inventory, if you wish to at least see the item. #FakeGameTrivia
