Our heaviest item we wish could be lighter is the original Helinox One chair coming in at 2 pounds and since there's nothing wrong with it, why replace it with a newer one that's a pound lighter until it's necessary..?

There is def a difference between “expired” and “best-by”. It’s good the older beef jerky didn’t cause gut issues while out on the trail. I had a buddy of mine wake up vomiting at 2am from who knows what and he struggled to hike out the following day. And yes, good rule of thumb, eat oldest first!

Luckily expired food is not something we've experienced in the last 25+ years out on the trail, but we've had friends it's happened to.
Usually not backpacker meals since they have such a long duration, but it can happen with those too.
