All that said, I don't feel I am speaking out of turn here to say that all Jews around the world should reflect on the reflex to intertwine Jewish identity with moral righteousness, given the events of the past two years.

In addition to being a naturalized US citizen (and New York City resident of 15 years who has never felt unsafe in this city being Jewish), I'm an Israeli citizen. I was born there. I have family there and grew up with the notion that I should love Israel.

I've read the supposedly anti-Semitic comments he made and they were nuanced answers to questions he didn't need to be asked while running for mayor of a US city. He has ultimately tempered those comments with numerous assurances that the safety of Jewish New Yorkers is a priority to him.
